Inside TasWater - Episode 8

31st March 2019

Our crew, who are available 24/7 365 days a year, recently received an early wake up call on a Sunday morning, as a burst main restricted water to a large number of properties in Spreyton and Quoiba.

An initial report of properties without water in the area of Spreyton started coming through our afterhours contact centre from 6.30 am. A burst main was discovered on Stony Rise Road, Quoiba, shortly after. A TasWater crew arrived at the site of the burst main around 30 minutes after the initial report.

A large volume of water was seeping up near a busy road and running into a nearby paddock. The crew onsite worked to isolate the water to the area so the pipe could be assessed and repaired.  By 7.30 am water to the affected pipe had been turned off which initially left approximately 250 properties without water. In an effort to reduce the number of properties affected water was re-routed from Paloona, which restored water to some of the properties.

Once the area of the leak was excavated a large 450mm main with a large spilt was uncovered. The damaged main was cut out and a new piece was lowered into position. The area was then filled in as water was restored to the remaining impacted properties by 3 pm.
