Booth Avenue Sewer Rising Main Renewal

The Booth Avenue Sewer Rising Main is a reinforced concrete pipe, which transports sewage from the Booth Avenue Sewage Pump Station (SPS) via the heavily trafficked Grove Road to a point within the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania Showgrounds (Hobart Showgrounds) adjacent to Grayton Street, Glenorchy.

The rising main is a pressurised pipe containing around 700 rubber rings. These rubber rings were some of the first of its kind installed in Australia in 1932, hence they were not implanted with compounds to reduce biological attack of natural rubber. In recent years, this has led to an increase in rubber ring blowouts.

In 2020 TasWater will be providing a replacement rising main along a different alignment to eliminate the repeated impacts of rubber ring blowouts from the existing rising main. The new material being used for the replacement pipe is high-density polyethylene. This has a very long lifespan and minimal requirement for maintenance once operational.
