Burnie Water Main Renewal

What's this project all about?

TasWater's Capital Delivery Office identified a critical need for the relining or replacement of the existing pipeline. During extensive stakeholder consultations, various solution options were explored, including relining, replacing the existing pipe along a similar alignment, or constructing a new pipeline along the Ridgley Highway. After careful consideration, it was collectively decided to replace the existing pipe along a similar alignment.

As part of the comprehensive investigation, the construction methodology, including ensuring water supply throughout project implementation, was thoroughly examined. A geotechnical investigation was conducted to determine the reactivity class of the soil in the pipeline routes. The preliminary version of the construction methodology has been developed and is currently undergoing review.

Although relining methods were discussed with specialist liner suppliers and installers, stakeholders opted not to proceed in this direction. As an integral part of the pipeline project, the reconfiguration of pipes and valves at the Three-Mile intersection has been completed. Additionally, a collaborative effort with the Burnie City Council is underway to facilitate the remaining work at Three Mile Line, coinciding with the installation of a new roundabout.

The construction methodology will undergo further refinement, and a comprehensive Total Cost of Ownership (TOC) will be developed for the project. Subsequently, the project will transition into its delivery phase.
