Chlorine in drinking water

Chlorine and water safety

Chlorine taste or smell

Some customers notice a chlorine taste or smell, especially if their home is close to a dosing point or if water flow is low. Water having a ‘swimming pool’ like smell can also vary with the seasons, maintenance activity or even your household plumbing.

What can you do? Follow these simple steps:

Let it sit

If the taste bothers you, try chilling a jug of water in the fridge — the chlorine smell will fade naturally as the gas dissipates.

House filter

You can also use a household filter, but make sure it’s properly maintained, to avoid contamination, and does not remove fluoride.

Reporting a problem

If the chlorine smell is unusually strong or persistent, contact TasWater on 13 6992 so we can investigate your local supply.
