It’s not uncommon for temperatures to drop below zero degrees in the colder months in Tasmania. This can lead to the water in your meter and above-ground pipes freezing - stopping water from reaching your home. But don’t worry - we’re here to help.
How do I restore my water?
Patience is your friend here. Let nature take its course and allow the pipes to thaw as the sun comes up and the temperature rises. This reduces the risk of damaging your meter or pipes.
How do I prevent my meter and pipes freezing?
Before a chilly night, make sure to cover your water meter. Blankets, buckets, or even cardboard boxes can do the trick. It’s a simple step that can save you from a lot of hassle later.
What do I do if my pipes are damaged after a cold night?
If your pipes on the house side of the meter are damaged, you’ll need to call a licensed plumber to fix them. Remember, property owners are responsible for these pipes.
My water has defrosted, but now it’s a weird colour!
Having discoloured water after your pipes have been frozen is perfectly normal. The ice crystals scour the insides of your pipes, so as they start to melt and move again they take rust with them and can make your water brown or red. Run your taps until it runs clear.
If the problem is with your water meter or the pipes on the street side, give TasWater a call on 13 6992. We're here to help keep your water flowing, no matter the weather.
