JackJumpers stars show how small water-saving habits make a big impact

Picture of Will Magnay, Ben Ayre, Josh Bannan from the JackJumpersThey might spend their nights under the stadium lights, but off the court, Tasmania JackJumpers players Will Magnay, Ben Ayre and Josh Bannan are just like the rest of us – managing household routines, tackling laundry piles, and finding small ways to save water. And as they point out, those everyday choices matter.

For Magnay, conserving water starts with awareness of Tasmania’s climate.

“It’s important to understand Hobart’s very dry as a city – we don’t get as much rain as people think,” he says.

That perspective shapes his approach at home, especially when it comes to washing.

“I always make sure my washing machine is full; I don’t do half loads. We practice 4–5 times a week so I’ll try to wash all my kits in one load rather than having the washing machine on every day.”
Ayre grew up in a household where saving water was second nature.

“My family was always teaching us to be water conscious, whether it’s turning the tap off when you’re brushing your teeth or shorter showers – it’s been a consistent thing in my life growing up in Australia,” he says.
Now, he’s quick to remind teammates that Tasmania’s tap water is world-class.

“When we have Americans here, one of the first things they always say is, ‘oh you guys can just drink the tap water here.’ We’ve got our three imports drinking Tassie tap water.”

For Bannan, it’s about keeping things simple. He laughs about his quick showers – usually soundtracked by a bit of country music – but says it’s also about setting an example. “Awareness is a major thing – that’s a crucial part in the fight to conserve water. We can all be more aware in our day-to-day lives” he says.

The players know small actions add up – whether it’s waiting for a full laundry load, cutting down shower times, and choosing tap over bottled water. Their message is clear: water is precious, and saving a little today helps secure Tasmania’s water future.

Just like the JackJumpers rely on teamwork to win on court, saving water is about all of us playing our part together.
