Our water is a Tassie icon - let's not waste it this summer
As the Tassie tuxedos get packed away and swapped for shorts and t-shirts, the demand for water across the state starts to climb during the summer months.
TasWater is reminding every household to think about how they use this precious resource, with warmer weather and the unpredictability of climate adding pressure to our systems, every drop matters.
TasWater Head of Infrastructure Investment Planning, Matt Jordan, said while the state’s systems are currently stable, proactive water conservation now is essential to avoid restrictions later in the season or into autumn.
“Summer is a time when water use naturally increases, but small changes at home, at the shack and in the garden can make a big difference,” Mr Jordan said.
“We’re asking everyone to join us in protecting Tasmania’s precious water resource.
“Throughout summer and autumn, TasWater will publish regular Water Watch updates to keep communities informed about the latest supply and demand trends. These updates will highlight any emerging issues and offer practical advice to help households reduce consumption.”
TasWater’s interactive Water Supply Status webpage provides regular updates on water levels and system performance across Tasmania. This tool helps residents stay informed and make responsible choices based on local conditions.
The award-winning ‘Save Water. Save Our Thing’ campaign returns this summer, reminding Tasmanians that water is part of what makes our island special and to ‘Save 10 litres. Save Our Thing.’
The campaign will feature across TV, radio, and social media encouraging everyone to take simple steps to conserve water.
“Despite water being an integral part of our way of life, Tasmanians continue to be some of the highest water users in the country,” Mr Jordan said.
“If everyone saved just 10 litres a day each, we could significantly reduce pressure on our networks this summer. It’s a small ask with a big impact, and we’re encouraging everyone to get involved.”
