Early return to Queens Walk for commuters
Hobart commuters are expected to regain access to Queens Walk before Easter, as work to install a new sewer pipeline progresses two weeks ahead of schedule.
TasWater Head of Major Projects Tim Cubit said the progress on the pipeline - a key part of the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation Project - was pleasing and the early reopening great news for commuters. The section of road was originally slated to reopen in early May.
“Hobart commuters will be happy to hear that the construction on Queens Walk is ahead of schedule, and we expect to reopen the road to traffic before Easter,” Mr Cubit said.
The section at Queens Walk forms part of the new 4.3-kilometre pipeline that will connect the new Macquarie Point Sewage Pump Station to the upgraded Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant.
“Next, we will be moving construction to Lower Domain Road as part of the next phase of pipeline installation,” he said.
Mr Cubit said while pipeline installation was progressing, ground investigations at the Domain Highway in preparation for the pipeline crossing have required a flexible approach.
“We had planned on crossing the Domain Highway during the closure of Queens Walk, but we encountered unexpected and complex ground conditions which will require some adjustments to our construction approach.
“We will now complete this work later in the year, during off-peak times to minimise disruptions.
“The adjustment in our construction method will not affect the overall project timeline.
‘’We thank the community for their continued patience as we move forward with this critical project which will deliver a healthier Derwent for a growing Hobart.”
TasWater is investing $1.9 billion in its network over the next five years to ensure it can continue to deliver exceptional water and sewerage services for a thriving Tasmania.
