Essential Queenstown works underway
A project to improve a West Coast treatment plant is well underway.
The Queenstown Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) remediation works will improve environmental and sewage service outcomes in the area.
TasWater’s Capital Delivery Office (CDO) Senior Project Manager Amanda Allen said the plant was vital to the Queenstown community.
“The Queenstown STP lies approximately 700 metres south-west of the town,” she said.
“The plant has been operational now for 35 years and it is time for some remediation.
“Particularly, the facilities at the plant that screen waste need upgrading, in addition to the aeration capabilities which help reduce odour at the site and are a vital part of the treatment process.”
The scope of the project includes installing an automatic sieve screen to filter out non-flushable items such as wet wipes and sanitary items before treatment and establishing jet aeration in the aeration tank which assists with the treatment process.
In addition, remediation works are being undertaken to the existing concrete aeration tank and the installation of a new switchboard, to ensure the technology used at the site meets modern standards.
Local West Coast business GBE Engineering, based in Zeehan and Tasmanian-owned RBD Electrical are the main contractors undertaking the works.
The Queenstown STP remediation works is just one of many projects TasWater’s CDO is undertaking across the state, providing improved water and sewerage services and environmental outcomes to regional Tasmanians.
“We started these works in late March and they are progressing well,” Mrs Allen said.
“Once complete, the project will help ensure the Queenstown STP meets modern standards and can service the community for years to come.”
The project is on track for completion by June 2022.
