Works are well underway to repair the intake structure on the Manuka River, which supplies raw water to the Strahan Water Treatment Plant. These works will help ensure that water can continue to be treated for our customers in the area. TasWater Project Engineer Seamus Hobbs said the upgrade work will replace the old timber retaining wall above the intake, which allows water to enter from the river into our treatment plant. “The retaining wall repair is critical to ensure the water corridor isn’t blocked, which could cease the water supply to our treatment plant.” “This work ensures a continuous, reliable water supply to customers in and around Strahan, not just for the immediate future, but for the next 50 years or more.” Additional repairs at the river intake include clearing vegetation, building a new concrete structure that will assist with the water extraction from the river, and removal of the old retaining wall, as well as planting new vegetation and rock installations. Launceston based engineering services company Duratec is completing the majority of the works, while a number of West Coast based businesses have also been subcontracted to assist with the completion of the overall project. “The team on this project is working both below ground level and near the water, so safety is paramount,” Mr Hobbs said. “We appreciate the hard work they are all doing and we also look forward to the project’s completion, which will lead to greater surety of water supply for the town. “The local Strahan community have been very receptive of the works we are completing in their town and have provided us with first-hand knowledge of the area, which has been a great benefit to the project so far.” The works are expected to be completed by November this year.
