Tasmanian Main Tapping Competition

Tasmanian Main Tapping Competition

The Tasmanian Main Tapping Competition in Devonport was a thrilling showcase of skill, teamwork, and precision on Tuesday 24 September, 2024. Six teams from across the state went head-to-head, competing for the prestigious title of the fastest and most efficient tappers. The competition was a true test of speed and accuracy, where every second and every detail counted.

Each two-person team was tasked with completing a 20mm water tapping on a 100mm pipe. This included connecting a poly pipe and stop valve. The competition followed strict rules, with teams needing to finish the task, pack away their tools, and place their hands on the pipe to stop the clock. Any leaks resulted in penalties, making precision as vital as speed.

In a highly anticipated final round, the West Coast Tappers took home the win. Their flawless execution and quick tapping of the 100mm water main without a single leak earned them well-deserved victory.

Operator of the Year

In addition to the main tapping event, the day saw prestigious individual awards presented, including the Operator of the Year award, which went to Leigh Rush from TasWater's Longford Sewage Treatment Plant. Leigh’s commitment to operational excellence and leadership in safety made him a standout choice for this award.

Young Operator of the Year

Additionally, Chris Kahatapitikankanamalage, who has excelled in his role with the Urban Networks South team, demonstrating versatility and leadership as 2IC and Coordinator of Bulk Water, taking the Young Operator of the Year award.

Ixom Best Tasting Tap Water

Another highlight of the day was the Ixom Best Tasting Tap Water competition. Thirteen treatment plants from across the state submitted their water samples for judging based on colour, clarity, odour, and taste. The Fern Tree plant emerged victorious, earning praise for its clear, refreshing, and odour-free water.

A big congratulations to all participants and winners. The event was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the skills of our people.
