Excellence rewarded by TasWater
This year’s Steve Balcombe Scholarship recipient is Launceston student Charlie Kingston.
Charlie completed Year 12 at Scotch Oakburn College, achieving an outstanding 91.5 ATAR, and will now pursue engineering studies at the University of Tasmania.
The scholarship is offered by TasWater to support a student studying environmental science, engineering, or a related discipline in an area relevant to the water industry.
TasWater will provide Charlie $6,000 for each year of his university degree over a 4-year period, along with professional and mentoring support through work placements.
Upon graduation, he will have the opportunity to take up a graduate position at TasWater.
In congratulating Charlie, TasWater CEO George Theo said “TasWater is proud of its continued support of the Scholarship and the positive impact it has in helping young people build a career in engineering and business. We look forward to Charlie working with us over the next four years.”
Charlie said he was excited and passionate about his studies.
“This opportunity allows me to explore my two passions - engineering and business,” Charlie said.
“Engineering ignites my curiosity in learning the scientific principles behind the properties that form our everyday lives,” he said.
“Business unlocks my creative skills and problem-solving abilities, where they can be utilised in my desired career field.”
The scholarship honours the legacy of the inaugural Chairman of Hobart Water, Steve Balcombe, who, before his premature death in 2001, had a notable career in both the public and private sectors in Tasmania.
TasWater has multiple opportunities for students. As well as the Steve Balcombe Scholarship, TasWater offers a paid Summer Intern Program for UTAS students, and a Graduate Program which is open to applicants from across Australia.
