TasWater’s Fearless Women

TasWater’s Fearless Women

TasWater is a Foundation Sponsor of this week’s Fearless Festival, an event focused on trade career opportunities for women, including hospitality.

The forum allows young women to meet and engage with over 70 other successful women of all ages from all kinds of jobs and workforces. The Fearless Festival will involve two trade days and a gala dinner, promoting the wide range and diverse types of career choices there are for women in Tasmania.

Fearless Festival Coordinator Michael Wickham said TasWater is the perfect fit as a sponsor and has been for six years.

“There is sometimes a void between believing in an ideal like workplace equality and doing it. TasWater is an organisation actively filling that void,” Michael said.

“The Fearless Festival asks questions like ‘Why don’t school aged girls see careers in trades or as engineers or scientists as typical and normal employment options? With the State and Federal Government funding programs and organisations to address workplace equality, where and how is that working best?’

“The young women attending will meet others from science, engineering, trades, law, accounting, business owners, police, fire and paramedics, park rangers and University of Tasmania Alumni,” Michael said.

TasWater has female employees from varying parts of the organisation volunteering across the two trade days as well as keynote speakers at the gala dinner. Speaking will be Trainee Project Manager Georgia Bowen, and People, Culture and Capability Program Manager Melissa Flynn.

TasWater's Organisational Planning and Performance Manager Yvette Gilbert said involvement in the event is exciting and inspiring.

“There are many reasons to be excited,” Yvette said.

“How often is there opportunity for female 16-years-and-older to attend trade days focused on diverse career opportunities within Tasmania and a free gala dinner, where they will meet inspiring mentors, network for success and get career inspiration?

“It is an amazing opportunity. Young women will have the opportunity to talk with more than 70 highly successful women from every field imaginable about future career options. It is so innovative. These women who are succeeding in their fields will each host a table at the gala dinner. There will be plenty of time for all the young women in attendance to move around and connect with as many of them as they wish.”

For the trade days even more exhibits have been added in the past weeks. The full range includes mining and engineering careers, aviation, crane and rigger, park ranger program including whale rescue, mechanic, bricklayer, University, law, nursing and accounting.

We also have author and restaurant owner Mexican Chef Rosa Cienfuegos now joining the Master Class kitchens.

“All of the fields listed above are represented by women working in them on hand for attendees to speak with at the trade days, and that includes TasWater. We offer a wide range of career opportunities for women and are proud to be a Foundation Sponsor for Fearless Festival for its sixth year,” Yvette said.
