Queenstown Queenstown Sewage Treatment Plant Remediation

What's this project all about?

The Queenstown Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) lies approximately 700m south-west of Queenstown in western Tasmania. It receives wastewater from a combined stormwater and sewerage system. The treatment process at the plant is comprised of inlet screening; an intermittent extended aeration lagoon; followed by a maturation lagoon with gravity flow to the nearby Queen River.

Several compliance and functional issues have been identified previously at the STP and in response to these matters, a remediation program was established.

The scope of work for the proposed Queenstown STP Remediation involves:
 • To remediate the concrete and blockwork wall of the aeration lagoon at Queenstown STP;
• To replace aeration system and improve its process;
• To mechanise the inlet screening function;
• To update power and control systems, replacing existing main switchboard to meet current TasWater’s electrical standards

Local West Coast business GBE Engineering, based in Zeehan and Tasmanian-owned RBD Electrical are the main contractors undertaking the works.

All proposed works for asset replacement and remediation (including temporary activities) will be contained within the existing STP site boundary. The STP site is bounded by the West Coast Wilderness Railway on the west and the Queen River on the east. On the opposite side of the Queen River is the Queenstown Golf Course. The site is accessed by a road entering the site from the north and the Project Team do not anticipate any direct impacts to residents in the area.
