Booth Avenue South Sewer Rising Main Renewal

What's this project all about?

The Booth Avenue Sewer Rising Main is a reinforced concrete pipe, which transports sewage from the Booth Avenue Sewage Pump Station (SPS) via the heavily trafficked Grove Road, to a point within the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania Showgrounds (Hobart Showground), which is adjacent to Grayton Street in Glenorchy.

The rising main is a pressurised pipe with more than 700 rubber rings. These rubber rings were some of the first of its kind installed in Australia in 1932, and were not implanted with compounds to reduce biological attack of natural rubber. In recent years, this has led to an increase in rubber ring blowouts.

In 2021 TasWater will be providing a replacement rising main along a new alignment to eliminate the repeated impacts of rubber ring blowouts from the existing rising main. The new material being used for the replacement pipe is high-density polyethylene. This has a very long lifespan and minimal requirement for maintenance once operational.

A combination of directional drilling and trenching will be used to install the new rising main will be installed from the Pump House Station on Booth Avenue, along the shoulder of the Brooker Highway, up McGough Street, then underneath Elwick Road and end at the Hobart Showground.

Community impact

Our contractors will do their best to ensure you can access your property during works, however there may be times when residents are temporality unable to use their driveway during trenching in the immediate area.As trenching progresses through McGough Street, residents will be asked not to park on the street for a period of 3 or 4 days at a time while works are conducted in the immediate area. You will receive advanced notice of this requirement in your letterbox.

All planned works are scheduled between the hours of 7.00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday and will continue for approximately 6 months, weather permitting. Depending on the ground conditions and weather, after hours' work may be required. Residents will be notified in advance if this needed.

No service interruptions to the sewage service are planned as part of these works.

While working adjacent to the highway, we will need to temporarily close the Redline bus stop on the Brooker Hwy, next to Fleming Street from Monday 18 January 2021 until late February 2021. Please contact Redline Coaches for the nearest available stop. Our contractors will do their best to ensure you can access your property during works, however there may be times when residents are temporality unable to use their driveway during trenching in the immediate area.
