Westbury Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade

What's this project all about?

We have successfully delivered a project at the Westbury Sewage Treatment Plant to ensure future compliance at the site.
Two smaller storage ponds at the Westbury Sewage Treatment Plant are being desludged in February 2024, with sludge transported to the Prospect Vale Sewage Treatment Plant for drying before reuse in farming. There will be a temporary risk of increased odour at both locations while this essential work is occurring.
While the 2023 upgrade of Westbury’s secondary sewage treatment lagoon is complete, this was one component of ongoing works that will reduce the long-term odour risk to the Westbury community. Approximately 900 kilolitres of sludge from these ponds can be safely disposed of by transferring it via tanker truck to a drying bed at Prospect Vale Sewage Treatment Plant. The sludge will be completely dry within two days and after further stabilisation over coming months, will be suitable for beneficial reuse. There will be increased risk of odour for the first few days of the work at both Westbury and Prospect Vale, along with about 40 truck movements between the two sites. This may temporarily inconvenience residents but will provide important long-term odour relief for Westbury and only temporary inconvenience at Prospect Vale.
TasWater considers these essential works and apologises for any inconvenience.
