Smithton Truck Wash

What's this project all about?

A new $2.5 million washdown facility to cater for livestock trucks and other vehicles will be built by TasWater on an unused part of the re-opened Smithton saleyard site near the Greenham meat processing works.

The three-bay washdown is designed to cater for the growing needs of the livestock transport sector in the far north-west of Tasmania and is being jointly funded by the Tasmanian and Australian Governments, with support from the site owner who has already funded rest facilities for truck drivers.

Two of the bays will be for livestock trucks up to the size of twin-deck B-doubles to wash off waste which builds up while animals are transported and to empty the trucks’ waste holding tanks with the new facilities having the ability to filter the waste washed off trucks, with solid waste removed for disposal and liquid waste being treated by the sewerage system.

Funding for the new truck wash at Smithton was secured with the assistance of the Cradle Coast Authority with funding from the Australian Government.
